What is PDF/UA, and why it matters
PDF/UA (ISO 14289-1) is the international standard for universally accessible PDF documents. A PDF/UA-compliant file can be read, navigated, and understood by people using screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver — in the order the author intended, with every image described and every table making sense aloud.
If your organisation falls under the European Accessibility Act (in force since June 2025), the EU Web Accessibility Directive, Section 508, or the ADA, accessible documents are not optional. An inaccessible PDF on a public website is a compliance finding waiting to happen.
What our remediation includes
- Complete, correct tag structure — headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links, footnotes
- Logical reading order verified with real screen readers, not just the tag tree
- Meaningful alternative text for every informative image; artifacts for decoration
- Accessible tables with header cells, scope, and (where needed) header IDs
- Document title, language, and metadata set; bookmarks for longer documents
- Validation to PDF/UA, HSS, and WCAG 2.0 / 2.1 / 2.2 as applicable
- Formal PAC 2024 validation — the report is included in your delivery
- A signed Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR/VPAT) for procurement or regulators
How it works
1. Submit. Upload your PDF to the free checker for an instant preliminary score, or send it directly via the contact form. 2. Quote. We respond within one business day with a fixed quote and turnaround. 3. Remediate. Specialists fix every issue by hand — no auto-tag-and-ship. 4. Deliver. You receive the compliant PDF, the PAC 2024 report, and the ACR/VPAT. Typical turnaround is 1–3 business days.
How does hand-crafted quality ship that fast? Our specialists work with DeepTag, the tagging software we build in-house — it strips out the repetitive mechanics of tagging so expert judgement gets all the time.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tagged PDF the same as a PDF/UA-compliant PDF?
No. Tags can be wrong, incomplete, or in the wrong order — "tagged" only means markup exists. PDF/UA compliance requires the tags to be correct, the reading order logical, images described, metadata set, and the file to pass a formal validator such as PAC 2024.
Can you remediate scanned documents or forms too?
Yes — see our dedicated services for scanned PDFs with OCR, fillable Forms PDFs, and Slides/Presentation PDFs. We remediate PDFs only, which is exactly why we're fast and thorough at it.
How is pricing calculated?
By document complexity, page count, and volume — per-document, retainer, and enterprise models are available. Run the free check and we'll follow up with a tailored quote within one business day.
