PDF/UA (ISO 14289-1) is the international standard for universally accessible PDF documents. It ensures your PDFs can be fully read and navigated by screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver. Organisations subject to the EU Web Accessibility Directive, European Accessibility Act, Section 508, or ADA are legally required to provide accessible documents. Beyond compliance, accessible PDFs reach a wider audience and reduce legal risk.
A tagged PDF contains structural markup (headings, paragraphs, lists, tables) that allows assistive technologies to read the content. However, tagged does not mean accessible — tags may be incorrect, reading order may be wrong, images may lack alt text, and language may be unset. PDF/UA compliance goes further, requiring correct tag structure, proper reading order, meaningful alt text, document language, bookmarks for longer documents, and passing a formal validator such as PAC 2024. We verify full PDF/UA conformance, not just the presence of tags.
Most documents are fully remediated within 1–3 business days. Simple single-column documents typically take less than a day. Complex documents with intricate tables, multi-column layouts, forms, or mathematical content may take 2–5 days.
